LIVE REVIEW: Cannibal Corpse, Triptykon, Enslaved, Job For A Cowboy, HMV Forum, London 10th March 2012

Arriving late I only managed to catch the last song of Job For A Cowboy, but not being a fan this was no great loss.  They had however drawn a large crowd, the Forum was already pretty heaving and the queue outside was winding down and around the building.

Enslaved took to the stage and straight into “Ethica Odini”, the first track from their most recent album, 2010’s Aximoa Ethica Odini.  Guitarist Arve was his usual self, like a child who’s eaten too many skittles, the man does not stand still!   Constantly a top the monitors or throwing shapes with his guitar, more guitarists should take note it makes for entertaining watching, providing a great live experience.

“Giants” got a strong roar from the crowd but it was their cover version of Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” that truly united the voices of the Forum, with what seemed at times like most of the venue singing along.  I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve seen Enslaved but this was definitely up there with one of their best live outings, the sound was majestically full, and the band were on top form. Finishing with “Isa”, despite getting a 45 minute set it still seemed short leaving me wanting more.  The absolute classic Slaget I Skogen Bortenfor which normally gets aired, was sorely missed.   Come back soon Enslaved!

Triptykon are always going to be in the shadow that Tom G Warrior was in Celtic Frost, but rather than shy away from the fact they embrace it, kicking off straight into Circle Of The Tyrants.   The sound was somewhat muddy but it’s still great to hear this classic in a live environment.  Mr Warrior with his now obligatory wooly hat walked the stage back and forth between bassist and guitarist, exchanging smiles, the whole band looked to be really enjoying themselves.  Continuing on with Goetia, the opening track from 2010’s Eparista Daimones, the sound issues seemed sorted and had the audience screaming along “Lord, have mercy upon me!!!”.  I’m pretty sure it helped with a few fresh converts to the Triptykon fanbase from the Cannibal Corpse devotees.  Following this they went back to Frost territory with “Dethroned Emperor”, bringing out Corpsegrinder before finishing with the full version of the epic “The Prolonging”.  With a forty five minute set it would have been nice to hear more Triptykon tracks, rather than dipping to Frost classics but c’est la vie, it still mad for a enjoyable set.

In an interview in the latest Metal Hammer Cannibal Corpse bass player Alex Webster stated “we have wanted to stay consistent….if that means people think we do the same shit every album, so be it”.  Well forget the nay sayers whilst Cannibal Corpse are never going to blow minds with each release, they stick to what they know and that’s bludgeoning death metal, and it’s what we came to hear.  Every time i’ve seen them they are consistent in putting on a great live show and tonight is no exception.  At times yes, the sound was pretty bad, whilst you knew the song they were playing, trying to make out the guitars was hard as they got lost in a thick soupy mix of bass and drums.  But sound issues aside they put on a stellar live show, interacting with the audience, and giving the audience a run for it’s money in headbanging and windmilling.  Whilst Slayer’s Tom Araya has his regular story of Ed to tell his fans, George Corpsegrinder Fisher goads the audience with his now regular challenge to windmill faster than he can, ‘try, but you WILL lose”.  He’s right as well, the man is like a machine, a one man blender spinning furiously with a neck wider than most aged tree trunks.  The band can back him up too though, almost on cue they erupt into a sea of flaying hair, necks twirling round and round.  How bassist Alex Webster manages it whilst running through some ridiculously complicated bass lines is a wonder and testament to his skill.

Opening with Evisceration Plague the track already sounds like a classic despite the album only coming out two years ago.  Two new tracks are aired tonight, Demented Aggression and Scourge Of Iron, and if the rest of the new album is as strong as these tracks, it may be we have an album even better than 2009’s highly reviewed Evisceration Plague.  The album “Torture” come out tomorrow so I guess we shall see.  Both tracks are seriously brutal, “Demented Agression” is Cannibal Corpse upping the ante with fast blast sections but “Scourge Of Iron” sledgehammers home very differently with a heavy, slow, and sludgy riff that wouldn’t be out of place on a Triptykon album.

Classics such as “I Cum Blood”, “F**ked With A Knife”, and “Born In A Casket” brutalise our ears but as expected it’s Hammer smashed face that turns the bottom floor of the Forum into one giant pit.  Fans threw themselves around, every single one of them with a giant smile on their face.  Set closer “Stripped, Raped and Strangled” brought even more bodies in, it was an absolute joy to watch.  New lambs to the slaughter fell to the floor but hands from every direction picked them back up them, before throwing them back into the whirlpool.  House lights up the forum filled out from an absolutely fantastic night.  Cannibal Corpse may have won the crowd and pit over but for me the night was taken by a truly epic Enslaved set.  The best thing is this is just the start of 2012 Death Metal gig season with Suffocation coming up at the Underworld this Tuesday, see you in the pit!
