10) Lazarus Blackstar – Hymns for the Cursed

Lazarus Blackstar - Hymns for the Cursed

Glad to see these releasing a new album, not many come close to being as slow and bowel evacuatingly heavy as these lot. Now if only they’d play gigs outside of Bradford I’d be a happy man.

9) Anaal Nathrakh – Vanitas

Anaal Nathrakh - Vanitas

It’s Anaal Nathrakh doing what they do best, another one to get the bile flowing in great measure.  :)

8) Aura Noir – Out to Die

Aura Noir - Out to Die

You just can’t beat Blackened thrash, with more than a  passing nod to Venom (back when they were good) this is a great listen. They were also very good in a live environment at Damnation this year.

7) Goatwhore – Blood for the Master

Goatwhore - Blood for the Master

As much as I still miss Acid Bath this really is a lovely slab of Blackened Death, which has plenty of groove to it. It’s just impossible not to love.

6) God seed – I Begin

God seed - I Begin

Great to see King and Gaahl working together again after all that Gorgoroth unpleasantness.  “I Begin” is a a fantastic début savage and ambitious. They sound invigorated with this album, and it really is worth a listen

5) Winterfylleth – The Threnody of Triumph

Winterfylleth - The Threnody of Triumph

One of the best Black metal albums put out by anyone ever, I cannot praise it highly enough.

4) High on Fire – De Vermis Mysteriis

High on Fire - De Vermis Mysteriis

Every time I listen to this album I end up playing air drums like Animal on crack! I’d write more, but I risk smashing my keyboard as they start thumping away heavier just thinking about it. Great stuff.

3) Woods of Ypres – Woods 5: Grey Skies and Electric Light

Woods of Ypres - Woods 5: Grey Skies and Electric Light

An outstanding album, which takes on extra poignance given the tragedy that befell the band. A real tragedy as this album would have been such a huge breakthrough for the band.

2) Alcest – Les Voyage de L’Âme

Alcest - Les Voyage de L'Âme

Aptly named the voyage of the soul, This was literally the first album I heard this year and still one of the best, Haunting and beautiful. It has the power to transport you away if you let it, if you’ve not heard it yet you really must.

1) Dragged into Sunlight – Widowmaker

Dragged into Sunlight - Widowmaker

To describe this atmospheric master piece as being the dog’s bollocks would of course lead one to believe in the existence of some mythical hound with eight scrotums, haunting the moors and humping people to death. An atmosphere of isolation, loneliness and crushing despair. This is an example of music as Art form and conveying a message to the listener. The message is that DiS really really do hate you and if given the chance would scrape your eyes out.

Head over to Terrorizer here to hear the full stream of the album.
