About

The philosophy behind Dark Forest has always been to create exciting, rousing, heartfelt heavy metal at its glorious best. Since formation in 2002 by guitarist Christian Horton and bassist Dave Batham, Dark Forest has constantly evolved and developed and continues to do so, combining a strong appreciation for the classical with the full blooded sound of a distinctly English brand of heavy metal. Dark Forest offers a technical yet fiercely passionate brand of music that defies categorization and all the stereotypes of the genre.

Based in the West Midlands, the spiritual home of heavy metal, Dark Forest embarked upon the live circuit, playing regularly throughout the formative years up and down the country. This early period also saw the band record their first demo 'Succubus' in 2004 and then a couple of years later two self-produced EP's 'Fear Dearg' and 'Phantoms of the Sea'. The EP's evidently had potential as in 2008 with the backing of German label Eyes Like Snow, Dark Forest recorded their first full length, self entitled album. The release in January 2009 was met with resoundingly positive reviews, Terrorizer declared that the band's technical innovation combined with their truly unique sound 'will have a lot of the bigger labels kicking themselves wondering how this lot slipped under their radar!...Looking for where heavy metal should be in 2009? You've just found it!' (Terrorizer April 2009)

After the first album, the band continued to develop and grow both in the sophistication of the band's sound as well as in stature, attracting regular bookings for UK shows. Will Lowry-Scott joined in May 2009, completing the band's first ever five piece line up and ending a long search for the talented and talismanic front man the band had always envisaged. To let the world taste the strength of the new line up, Dark Forest released a three track EP, Defender, with German Label Iron Kodex on CD and vinyl. A huge pre-order demand meant that vinyl copies were completely sold out before it was even released. The EP was met with high praise and was quickly succeeded by a number of high-profile international gigs. During the same year the band were also featured on Iron Kodex's 'Keep it True, The Undergound Kodex Vol.1' with their re-recording of 'The Wizard of Alderley Edge' which was released on CD and limited edition vinyl.

Better, stronger and more driven than ever, Dark Forest signed to Cruz Del Sur Music in 2011 and went straight into the studio to record the second album Dawn of Infinity which was released in October of the same year. Again this album was met with extremely positive reviews and a string of live gigs followed which saw the band delivering their passionate, energetic performances to ever growing crowds. The band toured Ireland, revisited Germany and played up and down the UK during this period.

In mid 2012 vocalist Will Lowry-Scott left Dark Forest. The search was back on to find the right man to front the band and a few months later they had found him in the form of the talented young Josh Winnard. With this line up they played the Full Moon Dog festival in Leeds which was professionally filmed for DVD release then on January 1st 2013 and brand new era began. The band were joined by the exceptional guitarist and long time close friend Pat Jenkins who took over guitar duties from James Lees. Refreshed and revived, Dark Forest once again look towards the future with plans already well under way to deliver a third album of sincere, pure heavy metal. The story continues…
