LIVE REVIEW: Devin Townsend – Newcastle and Cambridge – The Retinal warm up shows

Devin Townsend Newcastle Cambridge live review

A year ago Devin Townsend had barely finished a four-night run of London gigs bringing together his then most recent albums and playing them in full. Without a pause for breath an even grander spectacle was announced in the English capital for a few days before Hallowe'en 2012. Exact details were vague but the poster alone was enough to create a huge buzz of excitement.

Fast forward almost twelve months and the big event was approaching fast. At quite short notice two warm-up shows were booked to try out some of the songs on latest album “Epicloud”, a few as yet never played live to an audience. So far north without quite being in Scotland, knackered from jet-lag and the previous several weeks touring the USA with Paradise Lost, it would be understandable if Townsend and the band were shitting bricks. Talking to some of the fans it seemed some of them were on their behalf!

LIVE REVIEW: Huntress, Stagnant Breed, Drallion – Sound Circus, Bournemouth, 26th October 2012

Huntress Sound Circus Bournemouth live review

It was almost Hallowe'en and the dressing up had started already. The rather camp surroundings of Sound Circus were suitably decorated with skeletons hanging off the walls and the punters made up an amusingly costumed mix of good, bad, ugly and hilarious. It was also another special occasion. The first ever British show for American band Huntress led by self-proclaimed witch Jill Janus. Would it turn out to be a trick or a heavy metal treat?

Before that two local female-fronted bands started the night off and it was unfortunate to catch only the last part of Drallion's set. They mix death metal with flourishes of industrial and the occasional melodic keyboard licks. Blonde vocalist Beckie has a thunderous growl and also sings cleanly in the softer moments. Definite potential there.

Next up were Stagnant Breed. A name I had seen on lots of posters locally but never managed to catch. It was a pleasantly brutal surprise. Musically there were sounds of technical death

Album Review: Geist – Der Ungeist

Geist der ungeist review black metal israel

Geist is a one man Black Metal band from Israel and this is the debut full length from Ratimus the blackened soul behind the music. Just taking a glance at the Germanic track titles you know this is going to be Northern European in feel, with more than an air of Satanic atmosphere, and it doesn‘t disappoint!

After a short intro, the first track ‘Mord’ hits you with a cold wall of hissing guitars making you instantly aware that this is not an overproduced affair. The sound is more like something from the underground or back in the early 90’s, due to the album being recorded in a live environment. The vocals kick in and have that distant, echoey atmosphere that are just the right side of being lost in the mix, unlike the drums that are barely discernable, but luckily that is rectified on later tracks. This first track sets the stall for the rest of the album with it’s changes in pace from spinning buzz saw

Down, Orange Goblin, Warbeast – Roundhouse, Camden, London

Down London Camden Roundhouse Review live metal show gigFirst up at the Roundhouse were Texans Warbeast, a band signed to Phil Anselmo's label Housecore Records back in 2010. With a new album due out in February the band were keen to air some of the newer tracks and so the set was split between songs from the forthcoming album and their debut. I'd only heard a track or 2 before tonight and, whilst Phil obviously rates them that highly he signed them, I found them to be fairly dull. Don't get me wrong, the pedigree and history of the band members is steeped in metal and they are all very accomplished as musicians. The guitarists were shredding solos, and the drummer's fills and rolls were tight; however it

Album Review: Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovel – Don’t hear it…fear it

Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovel dont hear it fear it review

When this album landed in my inbox the name and album artwork conjured images of The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown and Captain Beefheart And His Magic Band but alas it was not to be. I was raised on 60’s and 70’s rock so this better be good! Was I disappointed? Was I fu…!!!

Now either someone has created a time portal back to the early 70’s or this trio from Hastings really have captured the sound that defined an era in rock. Right from the swirling atmospheric blast of acoustic guitar, electrified effects and the chanting of the intro, to opening track ‘Mark Of The Beast’ you know you are in for something special. The electrified riff kicks in and lays the path to the spacey swirl of rock that surges from the speakers. From the disembodied echo effect, to the gritty vocals, to the fuzzed out guitar sound, fat groovy bass and slick beat

Pentagram Bristol gig date and venue change

Pentagram UK tour doom

Due to Hurricane Sandy I'm sure you're all aware that lots of flights have been cancelled.  The promoter for the Pentagram UK tour Francis Mace has been working extremely hard to move things around and make this still happen.  Due to delays in flights the Bristol date has had to move.  The fact a date is still going ahead in Bristol means we have to give big respect to the promoter and venues involved, for managing to move things around at such short notice. Please find all the info below in regard to the Bristol date change from the promoter.  London, Manchester and Glasgow are still going ahead as normal.

PENTAGRAM UPDATE:

As I'm sure most of you are well aware - Hurricane Sandy has been looming over the East Coast of America for the past 48hrs and has caused a state of emergency to be declared in most major East Coast cities.

Damnation Festival final line up 2012 small

Damnation Festival is next week, and for most people it's payday this weekend. There's still tickets available for just £32, seriously that's a bargain you'd be looking at £15-£20 plus booking fee to see Electric Wizard in London and with this you're getting 23 bands, a free programme and a peaceville CD upon entry!!

Also Damnation have just released their bar prices, check this out:

Available ALL day at the festival - including the after-show party:

Tuborg Can - £2.50

Tetleys Can - £2.50

Vodka & draught mixer - £2.50

Bacardi & draught mixer - £2.50

Double up of house spirits for £1 (Vodka, Bacardi, JD, Bombay Sapphire, Southern Comfort, Malibu, Archers)

How many festivals or gigs do you go to where the drinks are that reasonably priced. We managed to pick up a hotel room for £28 so that's £14 each, and return fares from London are as cheap as £11 if you are willing to travel at ungodly o'clock. There's really no excuse not to go, this is a true rarity, a music festival that won't leave you crying all the way to the bank.

We figured for those of you still debating going, or those of you who have already purchased and are not too familiar with all of the bands you might find it useful to have links to all of them in one place. So we've done the hard work for you and gathered a selection of links for all the bands playing.

One slight disclaimer, these are not our videos, we've just embedded them from youtube, if any labels or bands are unhappy with it please get in touch and we'll immediately take down your videos on the news post.
