MASOCHIST – ‘THE EXTENT OF HUMAN ERROR’ E.P

By Alan Oliver

Masochist are a Death/Grind band hailing from the U.K. This is the debut release E.P from this 4 piece from West Yorkshire. It has always seemed that the U.S and Sweden get all the credit for producing the best in Death Metal, but the U.K has a fine tradition of producing quality bands down the years, and this is the next generation.

Whether by accident, or as I expect by intention, they have been very clever with this 4 track release. You see Masochist have been able to cover most styles of Death Metal, here with a liberal coating of Grind. A film clip intro opens ‘Born Fucked’ which then pummels you with brutal Death Metal of the rapid variety. This morphs on to give that 90’s guitar & bass Floridian sound so typical, particularly to our American cousins. Guttural growls sway into tortured pig squeals mid way as the speed becomes a more hefty chug. The drummer’s, at times, octopod style making use of what sounds like the whole kit to full effect. The speed then returns for the finale and suddenly it’s done. ‘Crucify The Whore’ hits us with another speedy blast before dropping into a more dirty rocking riff, reminiscent of Phobia in their pomp, before laying out some trad style rapid chord changes. Further in the track it slows right down overlaid with some sinister chanted vocals before once again speeding up into a choppy slam style, before ending in a squeal of reverb. ‘Iron Reign’ covers all that has gone before it, but this time incorporating a style and riff that wouldn’t be out of place on any Cannibal Corpse album. This track has a variety of vocals yet again ranging from gruff grunts right up the scale to a more screamed delivery, while the track breaks into a crunchy and more melodic pattern. ‘Mass Machine Operative’ Takes what is already been laid to us on the platter and adds in slower sinister riffs, with the chords left to air longer, before breaking into a Death Metal swirl of guitar and a fast, slow, fast, slow, pace that wouldn‘t be amiss on any of Gorefest‘s works. This shows us another variety in this case, a more repetitive and melodic section before ending in another blast of speed.

This is a smorgasbord of a release with the band giving you a taste of everything that they have to offer. Dipping their toe into the blood tainted pool that is Death Metal, Masochist have produced an interesting mix of an E.P with plenty of variety that will keep even the most critical listener happy. If this be the head, then we eagerly await the corpse, in the shape of their first album, to wash up in order to devour. 7.5/10

The E.P is available now from the UKEM Records store for £5.00
